Melanie and Greg: An Elegant Durham Wedding

I’m so excited to share Melanie and Greg’s wedding! When I first chatted with Melanie it was clear that she wanted an elegant wedding but, didn’t want it to feel too stuffy or formal. She wanted her guests to have fun!

The day started off with a lovely ceremony at Duke Chapel. To  honor her alma mater Melanie chose to wear Duke blue shoes and bring in the same blue accent with the flower girl dresses. After the ceremony Melanie and Greg took some time to stroll through Duke Gardens for a little personal time before meeting everyone at the reception. Once they arrived the party was in full swing! Guests were enjoying cocktails on the Washington Duke Inn patio and then found their seat in the colorful ballroom. Melanie’s second accent color, coral, was brought out in the  gorgeous flowers from A Watered Garden. After dinner guests danced the night away and enjoyed a fun popcorn bar with a combination of both savory and sweet treats!

I hope you read this blog and get inspired for your own wedding day!

Christen & Andrew- Duke Chapel and Nasher Museum Wedding

Christen and Andrew were married on the first day of spring! It’s that magical transition from a cold and dreary winter into a warm and blooming season. What better time to celebrate?

While they both were pursuing careers in Chicago, they chose to come back to their alma mater, Duke for their wedding celebration. The ceremony took place at the gorgeous Duke Chapel. To honor Andrew’s Jewish heritage they installed a curly willow branched chuppah at the alter and his family Rabi performed the ceremony. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a reception at the Nasher museum. Christen chose an eclectic mix of design. While the Nasher is modern, she brought in a few farm tables and chose a classic color palette of gold and cream. It all came together beautifully! For dinner guests feasted on a wonderful menu provided by Sage and Swift. And after dinner it was all about the party. In Full gave an amazing performance and there wasn’t a moment that the dance floor wasn’t packed!

Lenox & Bradford- Romantic Winter Wedding at Duke Chapel and The Angus Barn

There is something magical about a holiday wedding! Lenox and Bradford were married this past December just before Christmas. The wedding held a lot of elegant details, from the bridal party’s sophisticated blush dresses to the men’s black tuxes. But, the wedding didn’t lack fun! From the amazing Sleeping Booty Band  to the Santa hats and antler ears for all the guests, this wedding was all about the party!

The Angus Barn provided an incredible menu which included fried oysters, mini burger sliders, beef tenderloin, and ahi tuna with seaweed salad. And A Watered Garden Florist created a winter wonderland with 5 huge Christmas trees and tables filled with magnolia garlands, barley twist candle sticks, giant pine cones, and antlers.

Kelly & Andrew- Duke Chapel and Cookery Wedding

I’m so excited to share the lovely summer wedding of Kelly and Andrew!  They chose Durham because it was where they first met. In fact, they met their very first day of undergrad when they moved into the same dorm at Duke. After 8 years of dating and a big move to South Korea quickly approaching, they snagged an open spot at the chapel and booked the Cookery for the reception.

Both Kelly and Andrew wanted to show off a little Southern hospitality to their guests. Their specialty drinks were a Southern Gentleman and a Blueberry Fizz. For food Donovan’s Dish help create a custom menu which included Southern appetizers of  fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese, mini chicken and waffles, and Bourbon meatballs.

Since Kelly LOVES dessert she chose assorted cakes made by the wonderful Details Cake Design. Flavors included coconut cake, German chocolate, Hummingbird cake, and even a little key lime pie!

Megan & Scott- Summer Wedding at Duke Chapel and Bay 7

I am so excited to present this beautiful summer wedding in Durham! Megan and Scott both attended Duke undergraduate but, didn’t meet until they both enrolled in a masters program at the university. Since Duke represented such a large part of their lives, Durham was the perfect place to exchange vows and celebrate with their friends!

I had such a great time planning with Megan and her mom, Kathleen. They made a great team and I admire their close bond. Of course, the groom did get some input. Especially in choosing the cake from the always fabulous Art of Cake! My favorite part about weddings are the personal touches. In this case, it was Megan’s custom gown created with restored Alecon lace from her mother’s own wedding dress.

After a beautiful Catholic  ceremony at Duke Chapel the guests headed to the  reception at the historic  Bay 7 at  American Tobacco where they enjoyed amazing food from The Angus Barn, including some Maryland style crab cakes in honor of Megan’s home town. After dinner guests got down  with the fabulous Rhythm Nation and danced all night long!

We hope you enjoy these photos by Walter and Walters and get inspired for your own big day!

Zana & Chris- Intimate Duke Chapel and Parizade Wedding

I am so excited to share a very special wedding! It was such a pleasure to work with a bride and groom that really understood what a wedding is all about. It’s about sharing a beautiful day with the family and friends that you love the most.

Zana first move to the US from her native Kosovo during high school. She decided to continue her education in the states at Averitt University. That is where Zana and Chris met through mutual friends. Over the years their love grew, they graduated, and started careers. Chris, a US Army Engineer, found himself being deployed to Afghanistan. Zana and Chris both agreed that they wanted to be married before his departure. Like so many couples that sacrifice for this country, they skipped the traditional wedding and had a simple civil ceremony. But, they still dreamed of having  a more traditional wedding at some point and five years later they made that dream happen. Family and friends came from near and far to share in their special day .

The festivities started with Zana and Chris sharing an intimate horse and carriage ride to Duke Chapel. The wedding was just before Christmas and the chapel was beautifully decorated with poinsettia and greenery. One unique touch was Zana’s European style bouquet. Rather than flowers that are held  upright, they lay  across the bride’s arm. After a lovely Catholic ceremony, everyone gathered at Parizade for the reception. There guests listened to the live music, enjoyed great food, and had delicious cake from Sweet Memories Bakery.

I am so honored to have been  a part of such a special wedding. Please enjoy the images from the fabulous Brian Mullin’s Photography.

Ellie & Wes- Understated Elegance at Duke Chapel and The Washington Duke Inn

I had the pleasure of working with Ellie and Wes for a full year before their October wedding. My favorite thing about Ellie was her understated elegance. Everything was so gorgeous yet, not over the top. Everything was simply lovely.

The day started with a Catholic ceremony at Duke Chapel. Afterwards, guests headed to the Washington Duke Inn where they enjoyed a cocktail hour on the patio and the sounds of live music from Musica Musicians. When it was time for dinner the ballroom doors opened to show farm tables, lace runners, and beautiful flowers from Tre Bella. In addition to a traditional wedding cake, they had small cakes, including a brown sugar Bourbon pound cake that was a huge hit with the guys! There were lot of special touches. Each table had  a little trivia about Duke  that corresponded with the table number and each guest received a bottle of Dr. John’s BBQ sauce. It was made by Ellie’s dad using his famous family recipe. What a treat!

We had so much fun working with Ellie and Wes and hope you enjoy the beauty of their wedding day and let it inspire you!

Carly & Tripp- Animal Inspired Wedding at Duke Chapel and The Nasher Museum

As I was standing at the conclusion of Carly and Tripp’s wedding, I thought, “This is why I do my job.” It was such a pleasure working with a couple not only in love, but a couple that had fun through the entire planning process by focusing on what was important to them.  They started with two amazing venues. Duke Chapel for the ceremony and the Nasher Museum for the reception. Carly wanted to create a more traditional feel within the museum. So she chose warm pinks and browns combined with amber lighting to create a more traditional vibe but, mixed it with great modern table top accessories from CE Rental to mix the two styles. The soft and beautiful centerpieces from Floral Dimensions were an homage to her DC heritage and the blooming cherry trees. But, of all the  small touches my favorite was the incorporation of animals. Carly’s career involves studying octopuses and as a couple they both volunteer at the zoo. It all started with amazing invitations from Indigo Envelope that featured hand drawn animal sketches by a close friend. At the reception the guest book was a poster of sea animals, the tables were all images of adopted animals from the World Wildlife Fund, and the wedding cake was covered in an octopus and had kissing beluga whales as the cake topper. It all came together so beautifully!

Congratulations to an amazing couple!

Tonya & Jerel-Duke Chapel and Washington Duke Inn Wedding

Tonya and Jerel were married last July at the beautiful Duke Chapel followed by a reception at the Washington Duke Inn. I knew from the moment I met Tonya and her mother,  that this was going to be a wedding to remember! Tonya has great style and knew that she wanted to create a classic wedding but, with contemporary and modern touches.

It all started with fabulous invitations from Paper Cafe. The custom calligraphy and gold gilded edges set the tone for the wedding day. So much in fact, that even though this was a destination wedding, almost every invited guest attended!

We had a big surprise on the Thursday before the wedding when I received a phone all from Duke Chapel. A portion of the ceiling had fallen, in the front, and in the middle of the aisle. For safety they quickly erected  large scaffolding that ran the width of the chapel and covered several of the front pews. While an unfortunate circumstnace, Tonya and Jerel  handled the situation with grace and understanding. And it is a now a perfect example to all of my clients that even a mistake can become something beautiful. In fact, their amazing wedding video by Inkspot Crow highlighted a touching homily by Father Mike that compared the scaffolding supporting the chapel to Jesus supporting their marriage in the years to come.

After the ceremony guests were greeted at the Washington Duke Inn with Wedding Cake Martinis and a live Jazz trio which set the energetic  tone for the evening. When it was time for dinner, the doors were opened to show the stunning ballroom. Tonya chose neutral linens which allowed the gorgeous flowers by Tre Bella to really stand out.The tall arrangements of white dendrobium orchids mixed with lower arrangement of fuchsias, greens, and purples gave the room a classic but, contemprorary flair. For dinner guests enjoyed a first course of shrimp cocktail, followed by spring greens with strawberries, feta, pecans, and a pink champagne vinaigrette, and then a main course of grilled filet and lump crab with whipped potatoes, haricot verts, and sauce bodelaise. After dinner it was time to get the party started! Big Blast and the Party Masters gave an incredible performance that kept guests on the dance floor all night. And as a late night surprise, Tonya and Jerel served chicken and waffles. A perfect way to finish an evening to remember!

Johanna & Ben: A Fairytale Duke Chapel and Washington Duke Inn Wedding

Once upon a time on a gorgeous fall day a Princess married her Prince….and so begins the story of Johanna and Ben’s fairytale wedding. Johanna and her attendants arrived  to  Duke Chapel in royal style with a horse and carriage. The bride wore a stunning champagne ball gown and her attendants wore all white dresses. After the ceremony the couple invited guests to enjoy a long and unique day of festivities. They began with an early afternoon reception where guests enjoyed hors d’ oeurves and a wine tasting  while listening to live Classical music performed by Foscoe Philharmonic. The couple greeted guests in a traditional receiving line followed by champagne toasts and the cake cutting. Later in the afternoon guests had a special surprise with Elizabethan dance lessons so they could learn to dance in true royal form. After a brief afternoon break the guests were invited to the second portion of the festivities in the Presidential Ballroom. The couple chose warm shades amber,  golds, and reds to create a romantic feel for the evening. One of my favorite touches was the favors, mini sword letter openers for the men and Sleeping Beauty books for the women. After a delicious dinner Johanna and Ben had their first dance to, “The Sleeping Beauty, Ballet” by Tchiaikovsky. But, it was time to kick it up a notch and into modern times. Ryan with SPIN DJ led the way into finishing off the evening with a  dance party no one will forget.

We hope you enjoy this fairytale wedding and let it inspire you to make your dreams come true!
